Healing C-Section Scar Pain/Sensitivity

Do you experience pain or sensitivity along your c-section scar? Cesarean scars are much deeper than the scar you can see on the surface, and scar tissue adhesions can cause postpartum pain and sensitivity. Luckily, scar tissue massage can help! You can begin scar tissue massage once the scar is closed and the stitches are gone (check with your provider to see when you are cleared to start). As the scar is massaged it will become smaller, more elastic, and less tender.

Here's How!

1. Wash your hands first. Make sure your bladder is empty and you are propped up comfortably with pillows for support. When starting the massage you may find that a warm bath/shower or using a warm compress first will help soften the skin. You may want to use a mirror the first few times to get more familiar with the tissue. You can desensitize the scar by rubbing the scar with a q-tip, cotton ball or clean washcloth.

2. There are several ways you can massage the scar tissue: you can move your finger in circular motions along the scar from end to end for 3-5 minutes or “pinch, pull, twist” as described below:

With the Grain (working along the line of the scar): Grasp around the scar and lift it up from the tissue underneath.

Against the Grain (working across the scar): Grasp around the scar and try to move the scar side to side across the line of the scar.

Rolling the Scar: Grasp around the scar try to roll the scar between your finger and thumb with a twisting motion.
